Scary names or scary looks… here are five interesting marine species appropriate for Halloween.

1. The goblin shark

A large shark, usually 3-4m with a long, protruding snout and an unusual jaw that lives at depths between 270m to 1300m, sometimes called the vampire shark as living at such depths it avoids sunlight!

2. The vampire squid

A small squid found throughout temperate and tropical oceans in extreme deep-sea conditions. Despite its blood sucking name, the vampire squid eats drifting particles using two long, sticky filaments.

3. The giant devil ray

Also known as “devil fish”, the  can grow to lengths over 5 metres, making it one of the largest rays. They are most common in the Mediterranean Sea though can be found elsewhere in the Eastern Atlantic Ocean. These giant rays feed by trapping planktonic crustaceans and small schooling fish in their modified gill covers, these gills are also responsible for its "devil-like" silhouette.

4. The humpback anglerfish

Found at depths of at least 2000m in the open ocean and grows to around 18 cm. This species lives its life in the complete absence of sunlight and is named for the modified dorsal fin spine that it uses to lure prey.

5. The Blobfish

Live at depths between 600 and 1,200m where the pressure is 60 to 120 times as great as at sea level. The flesh of the blobfish is primarily a gelatinous mass with a density slightly less than water; this allows the fish to float above the sea floor without expending energy on swimming.
