World Oceans Day – because the ocean deserves its own day!
To mark World Ocean's Day we wore blue and had a collection for the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust who had loaned us their documentary Beneath the Waves, as the day coincided with our monthly Sustainability Film night.
The concept of a World Ocean Day (WOD) was first proposed at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in 1992.
Following a long petition championed by The Ocean Project and World Ocean Network, the United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution in 2008 that officially recognised WOD as 8 June each year.
WOD helps raise the profile of the ocean and inspire more involvement in helping to conserve the precious resource.
To mark WOD we wore blue and had a collection for the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust who had loaned us their documentary Beneath the Waves, as the day coincided with our monthly Sustainability Film night.
We all enjoyed being reminded of the wide variety of sea life that inhabits the coastal waters of South East of England. This documentary was made as part of the Wildlife Trusts’ South East Marine Programme.
